About Music PR
It’s all about getting and keeping your name out there. What good is developing and nurturing your music if no one hears it, aside from your possibly not so supportive neighbors? Music PR is just another tool in the shed for the entertainer who hopes to be successful. Public relations are useful for every industry, but for musicians, who count on their name recognition to pack venues and sell products, it is paramount.
The type of service required can vary from artist to artist, but the basic concept is the same: publicity. A local musician may need something on the order of a grass roots campaign that focuses attention in the immediate and regional area, whereas a musician, who may already have a following, might need national television and print media exposure. In all cases a web presence cannot hurt. That presence can be in the form of a social networking site, or something flashy and technical designed by a professional developer. More often than not musicians and their PR representative may chose to use both. Whatever the case, the PR firm needs to be flexible to their client’s needs, building name and brand recognition.
A music PR firm may work full time for its client or it may just provide a la carte services, such as bio writing, press releases, writing web content, or consulting. The successful firm has agents who have formed substantial and significant relationships with journalists, reviewers, editors, and radio programmers. These relationships pay off by clearing some of the obstacles hindering the musician’s exposure.
All in all, the level of exposure required by the musicians will dictate what type of PR firm or services that they choose. The musicians must keep in mind the guiding principle: it’s all about getting your name out there. P.T. Barnum once said, “Without publicity a terrible thing happens…nothing.”
